|
Here's a little treat, a screenshot of Journler 2.6 now that I've made some visual tweaks. Click the image for a full screen view.
Some time ago I forked Journler 2.6 from the 2.5 code, so while 2.5.4 and 2.5.5 were in development I was simultaneously working on 2.6. Mostly that's involved a hell of a lot of refactoring (code-cleaning).
Importantly, I have isolated the Journler Core from the Journler Interface and both from the Journler Application. It's like a pyramid of dependency with the Core on the bottom, the Interface in the middle and the Application on top. It is the first, largest step towards the plugin API. With the Core and Interface isolated, other developers will be able to plug into those frameworks without needing to know anything about the application itself, and they'll have complete access to the data model and standard interface objects used throughout Journler (like the folders list, the calendar, the entries list and so on).
The Core/Interface/Application separation also makes for some other cool possibilities. For example, doing some testing I built a second application that relied on the Core only. Meaning you could access a journal's data from an entirely different application or environment and do whatever you want with it. Which is to say, you don't have to use Journler to access your journal. Given the right application, anyway. Hmm, what might that mean...
But I took a break from the heavy duty lifting the last couple days to have some fun with the interface. I definitely like it. Journler is so much nicer to use! Amazing what a little shading, some gradients and insets, larger thumbnails will do for the feel of an app. I've been ambivalent about the 2.5 UI. Sometimes I think, yeah it's not too shabby, and other times I wonder, why is Journler so ugly? 2.6 does away with that ambivalence.
The UI is still a work in progress, so. Kudus to NetNewsWire, which inspired the changes in the attachments pane, as well as iCal which motivated me to change Journler's calendar. |

| I love the icons! I totally need to set up a way for users to share screenshots, post them on the journler site. I don't suppose it would be that hard. |

Hi Phil,
looks nice. But please don't forget that there are people with 12'' iBooks for whome useless used space can be very annoying because they don't have that much space. So my vote would be to introduce insets only optional.
thanks, Reiner |

| phpBB also supports functionality if it's enabled by the admin. |

Ooh, I like that idea. But I don't know very much about Flickr. It's not something I use. |

| Phil, setting up a Flickr group couldn't be simpler. I can take care of it, if you'd like, and make you an admin of the group so that you can delete submissions but don't have to worry about it. |

Guys, Im so sorry I don't have time to read all forum posts like I used to in the very begining ... BUT ... is there any chance a SYNC feature will be release with Journler 2.6 ???
I'm currently using ChronoSync, but bi-directional sync is out of question, I can only sync one direction currently. |

I second this request! This is quickly becoming a deal-breaker for me. I'm testing Together, and I absolutely LOVE Journler more. But lack of syncing is killing me. |

One reaction: The new calendar design seems to require more space, which is unfortunate -- it means you're stuck with a wider sidebar. The new calendar is attractive, but there was nothing wrong with the old one, and ultimately, I want the text of the entries themselves to occupy the bulk of my (limited) laptop screen real estate.
And one question: What do you expect the ruler to look like? Any chance we'll see a more space-efficient design a la the Pages toolbar? |

|
The mock-up with the website previews is great! And to answer your question about other document types, this (while it may seem silly) is quite useful if done well. The implementation in BibDesk is great: http://bibdesk.sourceforge.net/images/tableView.jpg Note also the full vertical preview pane (great for multiple attachments).
Another thing that you may want to consider is replacing the built-in document viewer (as an option if possible) with a Quicklook hotkey. BibDesk did this a while back, and I find it much more flexible.
Thanks for the great program. I tried Journaler a year ago and didn't get it. Returned a few weeks back after getting fed up with Tinderbox, and am sorry that I didn't pay closer attention last time. |

Phil,
I realize this is a bit forward, but I'd be happy to do some beta testing on the new version of Journler.
Thanks,
